Veteran Tax Relief Gains Bipartisan Support
HB2089 and companion bills authorizing the Missouri Disabled Veterans Homestead Exemption are gaining momentum in Jefferson City.
Momentum is building in the Missouri General Assembly for a package of bills that would create a Disabled Veterans Homestead Exemption. HB2089, along with companion measures HB552, HB921, and SJR88, has drawn support from legislators on both sides of the aisle โ a reminder that backing the veterans who served transcends party lines.
What's in the bills
The measures would create a tiered property tax exemption for Missouri veterans with service-connected disabilities, scaled by VA disability rating. Surviving spouses receiving dependency and indemnity compensation may also qualify. Implementation is targeted for January 1, 2027.
Why it matters
Missouri currently lags behind several neighboring states on veteran property tax relief. Bipartisan momentum means this is a realistic window for meaningful change โ but only if constituents make their voices heard. A short, polite message to your state representative carries real weight.
