How the Exemption Works
A plain-language breakdown of how HB2089 would provide tiered property tax relief based on VA disability rating.
HB2089 creates a tiered homestead exemption — the larger your service-connected disability rating, the greater the relief. Here's how it would work for a qualifying Missouri veteran on their primary residence.
The tiers
30%–50% disability rating
$2,500 annual property tax exemption
50%–70% disability rating
$5,000 annual property tax exemption
70%+ disability rating
100% property tax exemption on a primary residence
Eligibility basics
- Missouri resident with an honorable discharge
- Certified service-connected disability rating from the VA
- Owns and occupies a qualifying primary residence (home value cap applies)
- Surviving spouses receiving dependency and indemnity compensation may also qualify for the 100% exemption
When it takes effect
If HB2089 passes, the exemption is targeted to take effect January 1, 2027. The sooner the bill moves through the legislature, the sooner eligible veterans can begin claiming relief.
